Recentdevelopmentofinformationtechnologieshasbroughtusnewpossibilitiesforteachingandlearningclassicalartandhumanitiesinseveraldifferentways.Imageplaysakeyrolehere.InlearningclassicalJapanesepoetry,itisquiteimportanttoexamineoriginalbooksandmanuscriptsbecauseeventhepublishedbookswereprintedfromthewoodblocksofengravedwordswhichwerewrittenwithbrushby,inmanycases,theauthorsthemselves.Notonlythevisualartworks,butalsotheliterarymaterialsassuchposetheproblemofauthenticity,andthisproblemitselfiscloselylinkedtotheinterpretationoftheliteraryworksandthelifehistoryoftheauthors.YosaBuson(1716-84),apoet-painter,andhisfollowersbestrepresentthistypeofartistsandmustbestudiedwithbothtextsandimagestheycreated.
Busonwasaleadinghaikupoetofthe18thcenturyand,withBashoandIssa,oneofthegreatnamesinhaiku.HewasalsoadistinguishedBUNJINGA(literati-style)painter,andperfectedhaigaorcursivesketchwithpoemsasabranchofJapanesepictorialart.BusonreadclassicsextensivelyandstudieddifferentstylesofChineseandJapanesepaintings.Poetryandpaintingaffectedeachotherinhisart.Hispoemswere,spanerselyenough,richinimagery,clearlydepictingfinemovementsandsensualappearancesofthings,dynamicwithwiderlandscapes,lyrical,sensitivetohumanaffairs,romanticwithhiddenstories,graceful,andlonginglytime-conscious.BusoncompletedhisownstyleofpaintinginhislateryearswhenhewasusingthenameofSha-In.FreedfromtheinfluenceofChina,hecreatedgenuineJapaneselandscapes.
